IT for a seasonal business on the lake: plan for July, not April
Marinas, hotels and restaurants around Geneva Lake live and die on a few weekends. Their networks should be built for those.
By Zach Biel, Account Manager
A network that works fine in April and falls over on the Fourth of July is not a network problem. It is a planning problem. Around Geneva Lake, half the businesses we support have a season, and the season is when everything matters.
Survey with a crowd. Wireless coverage measured on a quiet weekday tells you nothing about a full pool deck. We survey on a busy Saturday and design for that.Separate the traffic. Guests, staff and card processing on separate networks, so a thousand phones cannot stop the patio from taking payments.Do the work in the shoulder season. Infrastructure goes in during the weeks when rooms can be taken out of inventory a few at a time. Nothing is touched in July.Run the seasonal staff checklist. Every spring, accounts and shared tablets for new staff; every fall, all of it removed. This is where most hospitality security lapses happen, and a checklist fixes it.Be there the first busy weekend. We are on site when the system meets its first real crowd, because that is the only test that counts. We built a network across a marina, hotel, pool and restaurant this way, backwards from the holiday. The owner has not heard about Wi-Fi since, which is the only review a network ever gets.

"Quick and efficient."
