What Copilot is actually good for in a small office
Not the demo. The five things clients use it for every day, and the two things they stopped using it for.
By Matt Wilson, Engineering
Every client asks what AI can do for them. After a year of rollouts, the honest answer is narrower and more useful than the demos.
Meeting notes. Recorded meetings summarized with action items. This is the one nobody gives up.Finding things. Which document said what, across email and SharePoint, in plain language. For a firm with years of files, this alone pays for it.First drafts. A client letter, a policy, a proposal outline. Edited by a person, always, but started in a minute.Spreadsheet help. Formulas and explanations of what a sheet is doing, for people who are not spreadsheet people.Catching up. A summary of a long email thread or a channel after a week away. What they stopped using it for: anything numerical that has to be right, and anything client-facing sent without a human reading it. Both went wrong once and did not get a second chance. The setup matters as much as the tool: the enterprise edition inside the company tenant, a two-page policy, and a short pilot. Done that way it is one of the better productivity gains available to a small business right now.
Consumer AI tools send whatever you paste out of the building. Enterprise editions keep it in your tenant. The policy has to say which is which.
An AI policy in two pages TechnologyCopilot in a small office earns its keep on meeting notes and finding documents. It is not for numbers that have to be right.
