Seven questions to ask an IT company before you switch to them
Including the ones we hope you ask us.
By Eric Grimes, Partner
Switching IT providers is nerve-racking, and most of the fear is not knowing what you are buying. These are the questions we would ask.
Who responds? Not who is on the website. Who actually gets back to you when you log a request at 8:15 on a Monday, and how long it takes. Send one and find out.How do you know your clients are happy? Ask whether they survey every ticket and who reads the results. Our answer: every closed ticket, and a partner reads every one. If a provider does not measure it at all, that is an answer too.Can I see your onboarding process? Written down, step by step. If it is in someone's head, it will be different for you than it was for the last client. When did you last test a restore for a client? Not run a backup. Restore one. The answer should be a date.Who owns my passwords and documentation? You do. Make sure the contract says so, and make sure you can get them without a fight if you ever leave. What is not included? Every plan has edges. A good provider will tell you where they are before you find them on an invoice. Can I talk to a client who has been with you more than five years? Anyone can have a happy new client. Ask for an old one.We are happy to answer all seven. We would rather you ask them of everyone.
Every new client goes through the same sixty-day onboarding, each step its own ticket, most of it before the contract starts. Nobody wings it.
