Multi-factor everywhere: the one control that stops most attacks
If you do one security thing this year, do this one, and do it on the doors that matter.
By Mike Chastain, Engineering
Most breaches we see in small businesses start with a password. Phished, reused from a site that leaked, or guessed. Multi-factor authentication makes a stolen password useless on its own, and it is the single control insurers, auditors and we all agree on.
The doors that matter: email, first and always, because email resets everything else. Remote access: the VPN or remote desktop gateway. Administrator accounts on everything. Cloud services holding client or financial data. Banking and payroll. What kind: an authenticator app or a hardware key. Text-message codes are better than nothing and worse than either. For staff who resist the app, a hardware key on a keyring is the easiest sell we have found.Rollout: one department at a time, with a fifteen-minute walkthrough. Expect a week of questions and then silence. Pair it with conditional access so the prompt only appears when something is unusual, and the friction disappears for people doing normal work from normal places. The trap: multi-factor on email but not on the remote gateway. Attackers try the door without the lock. Do all of them.
