Protection
A customer sent us a cybersecurity questionnaire. Now what?
Send it to us. Most of what they ask for is the basics done properly and written down, and we will tell you honestly which answers are already yes and which need work.
Answered by Nate Weigel, Protection Director
Three companies, three accounting systems, nineteen years of records. The plan that worked was the one written for the client, not for a vendor.

Larger customers, especially in automotive, food, finance and anything with a corporate parent, are now required to check their suppliers' security. The questionnaire is not personal and it is not going away. Answering it well keeps the account. Answering it badly, or slowly, is how a small supplier quietly gets replaced.
What is in it
Multi-factor authentication. Backups and how they are tested. Endpoint protection. Patching. Who has administrative access. Whether staff are trained. Whether there is a written incident response plan. Encryption on laptops. Occasionally a framework name like NIST or CIS. It looks technical; most of it is the basics done properly and written down.
How we handle it
Send it to us. We go through it line by line and tell you which answers are already yes, which are yes once we do something small, and which need real work. We draft the answers in your name, honestly. Then the gaps go on the roadmap with dates, so next year's questionnaire is shorter.
The same work pays twice
The controls a customer asks about are the same ones your cyber insurer asks about. Doing them once, and keeping the evidence, answers both.
Where we did this
A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a plan. Ask for the date of the last tested restore.
What to actually test From the shopEvery piece of gear we ship was configured and tested on a bench in Pell Lake first. Problems found here cost an afternoon. Problems found in your server room cost production.
The second-host storyPeople also ask
How warm is too warm for our server room?
Equipment is designed for roughly 18 to 27 degrees Celsius, 64 to 81 Fahrenheit, measured at the front where it draws air in. The number that matters is not the one on a Tuesday afternoon; it is the one at 2am on a Sunday.
The full answerWhere should our server actually live?
In a space with airflow, stable power, no water above it and a door that locks. Heat is the most common environmental killer of business equipment, and the room that is fine in March is a different room in July.
The full answerWhat is a server room reorganization, and is it worth paying for?
It is making the room possible to reason about: inventory, cable management, labelling at both ends, documentation, power and airflow. It turns a two-hour outage into a twenty-minute one, and it is far cheaper scheduled than done in an emergency.
