AI is raising your technology costs even if you never use it

Four cost pressures are converging on small businesses right now, and not one of them requires you to open an AI tool. What is actually driving them, and what it means at renewal.

By Eric Grimes, Partner

Most of what has been written about AI and small business is about whether to adopt it. That is the wrong first question for a lot of owners, because the costs arrive either way. A business that never opens one of these tools is still absorbing the consequences of everyone else doing so, and it will see them on a renewal quote long before it sees them anywhere else.

Four separate pressures are converging, and it is worth being precise about them, because they are often blamed on the wrong thing.

One: the security floor moved, permanently

Attacks assisted by AI are more targeted, more convincing and more frequent than what businesses were defending against two years ago. The phishing email is grammatically perfect and references a real invoice. The voice on the phone sounds like someone you know. Building that used to take skill and time; now it takes a prompt.

What that changes is not the shopping list, it is the floor. Endpoint detection, advanced email filtering and staff training that is actually run are the baseline for an ordinary small business now, not upgrades you consider next year. That is a real increase and it is not coming back down.

Two: AI infrastructure is pushing up hardware, cloud and software pricing

The data centres being built to run these models consume enormous amounts of energy and lean on publicly funded infrastructure: power grids, water systems, broadband. Those costs do not stay inside the technology sector. They filter into hardware pricing, cloud service fees, software subscriptions, and over time into energy costs in the communities where the data centres sit.

This is already visible in renewal pricing across the industry. It is the least discussed of the four and probably the one that touches the most businesses.

Three: AI subscriptions themselves are going to cost more

The enterprise AI tools available today are priced to win adoption, not to make money. As those platforms mature and shift from growth pricing to value pricing, the cost rises for everybody, early adopters and latecomers alike.

Which means the argument for adopting sooner is not that you lock in a lower price, because you do not. It is that you get more time to build the skills, workflows and governance that make the tool worth paying for once the price normalises.

Four: compliance now carries real overhead

State AI privacy laws, federal requirements and professional licensing board rules are arriving unevenly and on different timelines. They create documentation, audit and governance obligations that cost time and money even for a business doing everything right. For regulated firms it is already a line item. For everyone else it is heading that way.

What this means at your next renewal

When your technology costs rise, the honest answer is usually not that your provider decided to charge more. It is that the world you operate in changed and the cost of operating safely in it changed too. We would rather explain that in a meeting than let it turn up on a quote with no explanation attached.

The part you can control is whether you are paying these costs and getting something for them. A business with a written AI policy, a clear picture of what its staff are already using, and one tool deployed properly is absorbing the same market pressures as the business next door, and getting the productivity as well as the bill.

And the honest caveat

We are a small business too. Every one of these pressures lands on us, we are making the same decisions, and we apply the same policies to ourselves before we recommend them. We are not raising costs because of AI. We are telling you what is already in motion.

From people who chose local

Mike C. was spot on. Needed assistance setting up a software license with a third-party vendor. Mike was on time for the pre-arranged meeting and completed the install with no issues. After the install the vendor commented on how easy it went. Mike knew where everything needed to go and facilitated his end without flaw.
